Serampore with its rich cultural heritage and unique geographical position came to be the seat of Bengal Renaissance in the early 19th century. The efforts of the three missionaries – William Carey, Joshua Marshman and William Ward to impart basic education to local people, finally culminated into the foundation of Serampore College in 1818. They desired to have the College opening its doors to all students irrespective of their caste, colour and creed. It was made imperative to admit students with the understanding that the instruction would be secular in character. Consequently, the College has gained worldwide reputation as a unique educational institution proffering quality education in as diverse disciplines as Christian Theology and liberal Arts, Science and Commerce.
Serampore College is affiliated to the University of Calcutta for Arts-Science-Commerce Departments to run diversified postgraduate, undergraduate, diploma and certificate courses. The college being the first missionary college in India, has always been the core attraction to the meritorious students.
