SERAMPORE COLLEGE ALUMNI ASSCIATION
A BRIEF HISTORY
Our College was established in 1818 by the great trio Carey, Marshman and Ward whom we always remember with gratitude and reverence for establishing this premier seat of learning in the eastern part of India. Our college has through all these years have produced large number of scholars who have achieved eminence in different spheres – social, academic and political.
Despite being one of the oldest colleges in India, we had no documents of existence of ex-students’ association prior to 1947. In the year 1947, Old Student Association (OSA) was established by two eminent old students of the college, Prof. M. N. Biswas and Mr. A. N. Mallick. Among the activities of OSA, the construction of a Canteen and Girls’ Common Room are worth mentioning. Principal Angus Memorial Fund was constituted by OSA to help the poor students of the college. Cultural functions, Tennis and football matches were held regularly between present and past students. Dramas were also staged.
The OSA was reorganized and renamed Serampore College Alumni Association in the year 2004 with renewed administrative structure and activities adopting a new constitution.
ACTIVITIES
- Prizes are awarded to outstanding students of the college in different spheres of activities,viz.,University Examination Results, Games and Sports, Cultural etc.
- Felicitations are accorded to eminent Alumni, Educationist and Social Workers.
- Support to poor and meritorious students from the Endowment Fund.
- Support to the college: The Executive Committee of Serampore College Alumni Association keeps live link with the College Administration in its day to day functioning. The members are invited by the college in its different functions/ celebrations etc. and the Association offers valuable suggestions and help the college administration to the extent possible.
- Holding Re-union and Autumn Festival every year.
- Publication of Souvenir “Nostalgia” every year.
PROJECTED ACTIVITIES FOR THE YEAR 2010 – 2011.
- To raise membership.
- To raise more endowment fund from the Alumni with a stress to NRI ex-students.
- To launch a website of Serampore College Alumni Association.
- To prepare a directory of the alumni.
- To arrange to renovate R. L. Free Boarding that lies in a dilapidated condition, for the interest of poor students.
